  3. of Orange, in S France, held by the family
  4. from the 8th century to 1713. They held
  5. considerable possessions in the Netherlands,
  6. to which, after 1530, was added the German
  7. county of Nassau. From the time of William
  8. the Silent (1533-1585) the family dominated
  9. Dutch history, bearing the title of
  10. stadholder (magistrate) for the greater part
  11. of the 17th and 18th centuries. The son of
  12. Stadholder William V became King William I in
  13. 1815.
